Thompson Pass

Quick Facts:

  • Drive time from Valdez: 35 minutes

  • Activity: Backcountry ski/hike

You can’t drive to Valdez without going over Thompson Pass, so you will likely see these beautiful views regardless. If you travel to Valdez a different way, make sure to take the time to drive up to the pass because the views are breathtaking.

With over 700” of snow per year, Thompson Pass is a backcountry skiing mecca. Access to world-class ski lines can be found within a mile or two of the road. There are a handful of pull-outs to park at, and you can pick and choose where to ski. Having a snow machine will definitely increase your options. Early season skiing will likely involve a lot of bushwhacking, but it’s doable.

There’s also hiking that can be done off Thompson Pass during the summer. The only trail I have done so far is to Worthington Glacier. The glacier can be seen from the highway, but it’s worth the short walk along the paved path (summer only) to the viewing platform, where you can enjoy views of the lake at the toe of the glacier. There's also a trail that climbs alongside the glacier that can be used at your own risk.
