Grapefruit Rocks

Quick Facts:

  • Drive time from Fairbanks: 1 hour

  • Activity: Climbing

This is likely the best rock climbing that Interior Alaska has to offer. Tons of limestone and all easily accessed from the Elliott Highway (just past mile 39). There are two different parking lots, one on the east side of the road with a trail that takes you to Upper Grapefruit, and one on the west side of the road (1/2 mile past first parking lot) with a trail leading to Lower Grapefruit.

Overall, Grapefruit Rocks has a ton of sport climbing with some trad options. There are over 75 routes, ranging from 5.5 to 5.13. There’s also a decent amount of bouldering in Lower Grapefruit. I highly recommend buying the Fairbanks Area Rock Climbing Guide by Frank Olive and Stan Justice for additional beta.
