UAF Trail System

Quick Facts:

  • Located in West Fairbanks on UAF campus

  • Distance: tons of variety

  • Activity: Cross-country ski/hike

  • NO DOGS OR WALKING ALLOWED ON SKI TRAILS

The University does an amazing job maintaining these ski trails. They are well-groomed, so make sure that you don’t walk on the groomed trails. There are designated walking trails if that’s what you’re looking for. Overall, the trails are relatively flat, but you have options of skiing around Smith Lake, exploring the snaking trails, or doing the complete 6 mile Skarland loop. There are also ways to connect to other trails in the Fairbanks area. I’ve found that it’s best to park near Ballaine Lake or near the Ski Hut off Tanana Drive.

Dogs aren’t allowed on the trails in the winter, but there is a Pooch Loop that offers a 2 mile walk through the woods, starting near Ballaine Lake.

In the summer, this can be a great place to run, bike, or hike with the dogs.
